CINCINNATI - It's back to school time and we have teamed up with Cincinnati Children's Hospital to keep your children safe.

Waiting on the bus can always be dangerous but there are steps you and your children can take to stay safe.

Experts with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration say the basics are:

  1. Make sure your child arrives to the bus stop early, so they're not running to their ride.
  2. Avoid horseplay at the bus-stop.
  3. Children should never go in the street while waiting for the bus.
  4. Experts with Cincinnati Children's hospital say parents should talk to children about how important safety is and what's expected from them as the school year starts.

Here are some additional tips from Cincinnati Children's Hospital about safety after the bus ride:

  1. The child should wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing the street.
  2. The child should look left, right, left before stepping into the street to make sure there are no cars passing the bus.
  3. The child should cross the street at least 10 feet (or 5 giant steps) in front of the bus.
  4. The child needs to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before exiting.
  5. The child needs to exit from the front of the bus.
  6. The child should ask the bus driver for help if anything is dropped while entering or exiting the bus.
  7. The child should not talk to strangers when walking to and from bus stop.
