CINCINNATI - Parents of adult children may miss the rush of back-to-school shopping. But a local program is letting them get back in the spirit, while helping a child succeed.

Fill A Backpack Program

Officials at the Beech Acres Parenting Center want Tri-Staters to fill a backpack for at least one child.

Here's how it works:

First, call the center at ( 513) 231-6630. Then choose a female or male student in elementary, middle or high school. Beech Acres representatives will give the caller a specific school supply list for the selected child. Then, the Tri-Stater will go shopping, and drop-off the supplies at one of the two Beech Acres offices-- either 6881 Beechmont Avenue (map)  or 4966 Glenway Avenue (map).

All supplies are due by August 9, 2011.

Glendale School Supply Drive

For residents who prefer the traditional school supply drive, there are plenty of them across the Tri-State.

This year the Glendale Police Department , led by Chief Dave Warman, has joined forces with the Glendale Fire Department and two residents from a garden club to collect basic supplies for Glendale students in need.

The first year of the collaboration is starting small but they hope to expand it.

"We would love to have more bookbags and more supplies so we can actually reach up to 50. That would be an amazing goal. Our original goal was 25... So whatever people can give is just so appreciated," said organizer Bev Rieckhoff.

"When you're a child going to school, any supply that you have that makes you apart of everybody else, that helps you achieve the educational goals that your family has for you, everything that you give is a big thing for that child," said Connie Reed who serves as a volunteer firefighter and chaplain within the village of Glendale.

Donations can be dropped off at the Glendale Police Department at 301 East Sharon Road (map). The deadline is August 8, 2011.

Monroe School Supply Drive

The Monroe Police Department is also asking for school supplies. The drive benefits students attending Monroe local schools.

The following items can be dropped off in the lobby at 233 South Main Street (map):

  • Backpacks
  • Glue
  • Pencils
  • Folders
  • Pens
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Crayons
  • Pencil box
  • Markers
  • Lunch Box

The donations are due no later than August 16, 2011.

Project Backpack

Stop by any Huntington Bank branch to donate school supplies as well.

WCPO is partnering with the bank once again for Project Backpack, which benefits local children in need.

The drive ends Sunday, July 31.
