CINCINNATI - It's easy to physically get your child ready for school, but the mental preparation for class takes a little more work.

Dr. Robin Gurwitch, who works for Cincinnati Children's Hospital Division of Development & Behavioral Pediatrics, recommends for parents to start talking to their kids about school a couple weeks before the first day of class. She says this gives them opportunities to express their anxiety, concerns or excitement.

For kindergartners, Dr. Gurwitch recommends taking them to the school during the summer to let them play on the playground and meet their teachers.

For elementary age students, it's recommended to allow your child some freedom to buy something they want like a trendy folder or new outfit to get them excited about school. Also, encourage your children to form new relationships with teachers and classmates.

For teens, try to encourage them to get involved in at least one extracurricular activity. Additionally, help them set goals for their classes for the upcoming year.
