CINCINNATI - As parents tackle the annual tradition of back to school shopping, Good Morning Tri-State anchor Kathrine Nero pines for the school supplies of old.
Remember the sound of the industrial strength velcro? It could mean only one thing- the mead trapper keeper.
Kathrine says it's truly the epitome of school supplies for adults of her generation.
But, oh how school supplies have changed.
Not so long ago, schools provided the pencils and paper, the glue and the scissors.
But budget cuts have trickled down to the parents. Which means our school shopping list is a full page.
Kathrine admits to an unnatural love of school supplies. She has no problem buying pocket folders and pens and pencil cases and everything in between.
But now items like dry erase markers and Ziploc bags are on school supply lists. She says it kinda makes you miss the old stuff our parents used to have to buy.
We took this dilemma - where else - to Facebook - the place where remembering "way back when" is taking on a high tech spin.
Sure, you can get a stretchy book cover, but Facebook friend Steve laments the good old days when a grocery bag would do. We were eco-friendly before we knew what that meant.
And remember those super-pointy compasses? How on earth were children allowed to use those things? We can't even take them on a plane these days.
Oh, and thank you Carol and Eric for reminding us of rubber cement. Talk about a mess. A teacher must have invented the now ubiquitous glue stick.
And don't forget those dinged up metal lunchboxes. Augustus remembers them well. But he's not alone, even Kathrine's husband still has his Evel Knieval one. Now that was instant status.
We hope you enjoy your trip to the school supply aisle. Happy shopping!
