When November rolls around, Butler County politicians start boning up for Spark’s annual election round-up. Students who work on the monthly news magazine research issues that affect their community, then grill candidates. It’s the shining example of language arts meets advocacy journalism at a high school that’s earned an excellent ranking from the state of Ohio for five straight years. In May, Spark won a “Gold Crown” from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, one of only 20 high school publications in the country to receive the honor.
